HISTORY

In the year 1986 an evil foursome emerged from the underground...the band known as MORBID ANGEL had its beginnings three years before in Tampa, Florida, when Trey Azagthoth (lead guitar), Mike Browning (drums) and Dallas Ward (bass), bonded by the passion for occultism and Black Metal, gave birth to the legend. MORBID ANGEL started rehearsing instrumental versions of MERCYFUL FATE and SLAYER covers as well as their first compositions "Morbid Angel" and a very early version of "Maze Of Torment". In 1985, MORBID ANGEL entered a small studio to record the tracks "The Gate", "Demon Seed" and "Welcome To Hell". At that time singer Kenny Bamber joined the band who told them that he could sing as high as the mighty King Diamond !!! Dallas Ward did also some vocals on that recording and the result was a demo tape including different versions, sung by Kenny Bamber (the high ones) and Dallas Ward (the deeper and raw ones). This demo was never released to the public and after the band listened to the recordings, they decided that Kenny Bamber's style didn't fit to the band so Dallas continued singing. A friend of theirs, Richard Brunelle, was asked to join as second lead guitar to complete the line-up and he did also some vocals on early live shows, together with Dallas Ward. The next of many line-up changes saw Dallas Ward replaced with John Ortega in July 1985. Meanwhile during the first live apparitions it was clear that the band needed a powerful vocalist but at that time no one was found, so in early 1986 Mike Browning started singing and became the vocalist for MORBID ANGEL. A four song rehearsal demo was recorded. This tape showed to all underground freaks that MORBID ANGEL had developed into the most evil act ever appeared! Thus, TOTAL HIDEOUS DEATH was forged from the very depths of hell...! The band following grew into the underground scene by word of mouth of fanzines and tape traders, so MORBID ANGEL decided it was finally time to give their fans an album and signed a record deal with a small label, GOREQUE RECORDS, whose owner was David Vincent. In April 1986, the four musicians entered the CENTRAL RECORDING STUDIO in North Carolina where, with the help of METAL BLADE boss Bill Metoyer, Vincent himself and the Ancient Ones feeding their black souls, the ultimate underground album of all times was captured from the abyss and trapped on tape! Unfortunately this evil satanic masterpiece wasn't released. Soon after recording sessions were completed, John Ortega left the band and Sterling Von Scarborough joined MORBID ANGEL. Trey Azagthoth and Richard Brunelle decided that the result wasn't good enough to officially release it and also Mike Browning and Richard Von Scarborough weren`t the right musicians to play the new material that Trey Azagthoth was writing, so they got fired. According to Mike Browning, the truth about cancelling the release of "Abominations Of Desolation" was another story... Mike Browning and Sterling Von Scarborough formed INCUBUS, that lasted just the time to do a three song demo in 1987 and then Mike Browning formed the legendary NOCTURNUS...New members chosen were David Vincent (bass), who gave up his label without having released anything (the MASSACRE 12" followed the "Abominations Of Desolation" destiny), Wayne Hartsell (drums) and for the first weeks only, a guy called Michael Manson (vocals). We all know what happened later...David Vincent started singing and MORBID ANGEL became underground leaders with the success of their classic three song demo "Thy Kingdom Come", released in 1987. In 1988 godly Wayne left the band (got married) and ex-TERRORIZER drummer Pete Sandoval joined, adding incredible speed to the songs. Vinyl debut was the partecipation to the "Satan's Revenge Part II" compilation LP (with "Thy Kingdom Come" from their successful demo tape), then came the deal with EARACHE RECORDS, the limited edition "Thy Kingdom Come" 7" EP (released on swiss label SPLATTERMANIAC RECORDS), the "Altars Of Madness" full lngth LP, tours in Europe and USA...MORBID ANGEL is a big band now, but even if they have progressed in brutality, raging speed and are way more tight musicians, the old feeling, the hollow black sound, the "Magick" is sadly lost. We all know that the "Abominations Of Desolation" days will never return but in our minds, in our souls, everytime we'll play this immense, monumental album, the "Abominations Of Desolation" band will live forever! Since there was no chance that the band will ever release this album (Trey Azagthoth said in a lot of interviews, that it was just a demo recording...), two true long time MORBID ANGEL abusers decided to unofficially bootleg it in a limited edition of 1000 copies. The record was released by SATANIC RECORDS (Japan) and distributed by NOSFERATU RECORDS (Italy). A few weeks later some counterfeit pressings in different vinyl colour and picture-LP format were available on many underground mailorders...nobody knows who many records were sold at that time, but the original pressing in black vinyl was strictly limited to 1000 copies. The album was available as splatter vinyl, glow-in-the-dark vinyl, clear vinyl, red vinyl and purple vinyl and it seems that the small bootleg label HEADACHE RECORDS pressed the counterfeits, straight dubbed from the black vinyl version, but it is just a rumour... Months later, when the black market was on its high point and thousands of die-hard-fans ordered copies of that bootleg, David Vincent sold the rights for that album to EARACHE and they decided to release "Abominations Of Desolation" as an official CD and LP. The result was a cheap release without any effort to honour this masterpiece and the first real Death Metal album ever. Well, it has the most clean sound (but never the best) so far (taken from the original master tape), but the layout is very cheap and there are no credits about the studio, the line up etc. and also the lyrics are missing on that version. Maybe sometimes they will release a definitifve edition to give the album that kind of respect that it's worth...

(the original history text was printed on the backcover of the bootleg LP, released in early 1991 through SATANIC RECORDS (Japan) and distributed by NOSFERATU RECORDS (Italy). I used it to make some changes here and there, because there were some mistakes and missing facts, but I liked the style of writing so I decided to take this history as a body for more facts and details to come in the future!)
